The Gulf of Finland

After we went to the Chesma Church, Andrea and I made our way to the Gulf of Finland. It was not what we expected. It was filthy and covered in glass, clothing, bricks, and metal. I'm still glad we went though. The gulf is still completely frozen. You can see men in the picture above ice fishing.

Ice fishers.
A man and his dog.

Not sure what this is.

It's really eerie to think that this is where the Finnish army and Nazis blockaded Leningrad (St. Petersburg's former name). The German and Finnish army surrounded Leningrad for 900 days which caused a famine in the city that killed over 600,000 people. They had to eat rodents, their pets, and eventually each other. There was no public transportation, heating, or electricity. The winters were harsh. Eventually food rations went to 1/4 of a pound of bread a day. I can't even imagine...

To get to the gulf, we took the metro to Vasilyevsky Island. Once we got off the metro, we just walked until the island ended. It was a long walk.

Our shoes were COVERED in mud after this day.

Looks like you made an ugly beach into beautiful pictures. :) I'm glad you posted some history, too! That's fascinating... and so sad! Makes me shiver!
