Church of the Spilled Blood

Russian countryside.

Russian countryside.

This is the Narva Triumphal Arch which is a tribute to the defeat of Napoleon. It is one of the city's oldest gates. Supposedly, there are two staircases inside leading up to an exposition hall, but it's been closed down.

"Napoleon was this tall."

Nevsky Prospekt is the main street. It is really beautiful.

Statues are everywhere!!!

Nevsky Prospekt is sooo busy!

He even has armpit hair! This guy and his buddies line the outside of the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace.

This is the famous Church of the Spilled Blood. The whole time I thought, "Wow, what a fascinating name for a church. Interesting way to describe Christ's sacrifice." Then I read about the history. The church sits where Alexander II was blown up by a terrorist group in 1881. Nice...

Up close. It was a gorgeous day.

So ornate.

The inside of one of the domes. I had to crane my neck to get this shot.

Facts about the Church of the Spilled Blood:
- The steeple is 266 feet tall.
- The mosaic panels about halfway up are New Testament scenes.
- There are 20 granite plaques that depict the main events of Alexander's reign.

The Church of the Spilled Blood has other names too such as Church of the Savior on Blood and Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. I think the actual name for it in Russian is Church of the Savior on Blood.

BEAUTIFUL! St. Petersburg looks like a really pretty city! What did the guy with the arm pit hair and his friends represent? I love statues and detailed buildings like that! The river your took a picture next too for some reason reminded me of the pictures I've seen of Italy!

What an incredible, GORGEOUS church! I feel so deprived that we have nothing like that in America... so much work for God's glory! That makes me wanna go to Russia, even if it is cold.
